When running "System File Checker" in Windows 98 the file "USER.EXE" is corrupted when this file is checked.

Procedure:

The following procedure will rebuild the "USER.EXE" file during the file checking
process in "System File Checker"

Boot the computer into Windows 98

Click "Start/Programs/Accessories/System Information.

Click the "Tools" menu.

Click "System File Checker"

This will bring up a window for "System File Checker".

In the field "Select an option and click Start" click "Scan for altered files" and click "Start"

During the operation of "System File Checker" the file "USER.EXE" will be flagged as corrupted. In the field "What do you want to do? "choose " Update verification information" and click "OK".

DO NOT choose "Restore file", this option may change the user.exe settings and cause the computer not to boot properly.

Once "System File Checker" finishes click "OK" and close "System File Checker".

Restart Windows 98. When "System File Checker" is run the file user.exe will be repaired successfully.
